Pada materi sebelumnya, kita sudah membahas tentang common idiom yang umum digunakan oleh English native speakers. Nah, nyatanya masih banyak lho common idiom atau idiom umum yang harus kamu ketahui.

Between A Rock and A Hard Place

Idiom ini memiliki arti “terjebak di antara dua hal yang sama buruknya”, jadi maju kena, mundur kena juga. Familiar dengan kondisi ini? Sama mimin juga xD

Example:

  • She’s caught between a rock and a hard place
  • It sounds like you’re trapped between a rock and a hard place
  • Don’t worsen my problems, please, I don’t want to be caught between a rock and a hard place.

Bite Off More Than…Can Chew

“Bite off more than … can chew” dalam bahasa Indonesia sepadan dengan pepatah “pungguk merindukan bulan”. Atau dalam bahasa Jawa mahsyur dengan peribahasa “cecak nguntal pagak”.

Idiom ini persisnya memiliki arti “melahap lebih banyak daripada yang bisa dikunyah”.

Example:

  • Don’t bite off more than you can chew, Steve, or you’ll be damned!
  • She bites off more than she can chew, no wonder she gets that worst fate
  • Why do they like to bite off more than they can chew, it’s better to just shut up than against the government right?

Bite The Bullet

Bite the bullet memiliki arti to overcome something bad that’s coming, atau dalam bahasa Indonesia-nya menerima sebuah masalah dengan konsekuen.

Example:

  • If we don’t bite the bullet, we’ll never be succeed
  • There’s no other choice but to bite the bullet
  • So we really need to bite the bullet, can’t we just do something to prevent it?

Call It A Day

Idiom satu ini bisa digunakan untuk mengatakan berhenti melakukan/menggarap sesuatu, tapi hanya untuk sementara.

Example:

  • We’re all so ran out already, I think we can just call it a day and continue it tomorrow
  • Can’t you call it a day 30 minutes earlier today?
  • We’ll call it a day at 8 pm, and take a day off tomorrow

Cheap As Chips

Cheap as chips adalah idiom yang bisa digunakan untuk mengatakan “murah banget!”.

Example:

  • Do you believe these glamorous slippers are cheap as chips?
  • I’ve just bought a TV with a price as cheap as chips
  • We need to look for stores with stuff as cheap as chips since we barely have any money

Clam Up

Clam up adalah idiom yang memiliki arti “tiba-tiba terdiam/tidak bisa bicara/kehilangan kata-kata”.

Example:

  • She clams up right after her father snaps at her
  • He clammed up spontaneously when his crush entered the room
  • The teacher asks the students to answer the question, but everyone clams up

Cold Feet

Cold feet dalam bahasa Indonesia artinya adalah “tegang” atau merasa nervous.

Example:

  • I was always getting cold feet when I met you
  • Train yourself to not feeling cold feet whenever you’re on stage
  • Wait, I’m checking for cold feet

Cost An Arm and A Leg

Cost an arm and a leg adalah idiom yang memiliki makna “sangat mahal harganya”, atau “memerlukan banyak pengorbanan”. Idiom ini cocok digunakan untuk sesuatu yang nilainya lebih rendah daripada biaya yang dikeluarkan.

Example:

  • She’s just bought a dress cost an arm and a leg
  • Indonesia’s independence cost an arm and a leg, and you’re going to trifle it away by using drugs?
  • This ancient bike really cost an arm and a leg

Couch Potato

Couch potato adalah idiom untuk menyebut orang yang sangat malas, enggan melakukan apa-apa. Atau istilah pendeknya, “tukang mager”.

Example:

  • I don’t want to go out this weekend, all I want is to become a couch potato
  • Always being a couch potato is not good for your health, you need to do more exercise
  • Don’t be a couch potato! You’re 22 already! Just go get some work now!

Couldn’t Care Less

Nggak banyak yang tahu, couldn’t care less adalah idiom lho, bukan kalimat biasa! Couldn’t care less artinya adalah “bodo amat” dalam bahasa Indonesia.

Kamu bisa menggunakan idiom satu ini untuk menunjukkan kecuekan/ketidaktertarikanmu atas suatu hal.

Example:

  • ..I guess I couldn’t care less with it, not anymore
  • I couldn’t care less whether Gio gets into a relationship or not! You know I’ve moved on already
  • I couldn’t care less about her since she always rejected me before this

Cut To The Chase

Cut to the chase adalah idiom yang artinya “langsung ke poin pentingnya aja”. Idiom ini bisa jadi pengganti dari kata “please be direct”, atau “to the point”.

Example:

  • So cut to the chase, Matt is so angry because Dave has punched him yesterday
  • Don’t babble, please, just cut to the chase
  • Can’t you just cut to the chase? I’m on hurry now

Cutthroat

Cutthroat artinya adalah sebuah situasi yang sangat berbahaya, yang membuat manusia rela saling menghancurkan.

Example:

  • We trapped on a cutthroat People killed each other to get some bread and water
  • I don’t want to join the gambling, it could be a cutthroat business anyway
  • Uyghur Muslims are on a cutthroat condition, we should save them from that

Face The Music

Face the music adalah idiom dengan arti “menerima konsekuensi atas tindakan yang dilakukan”. Sekilas idiom ini artinya mirip dengan “bite the bullet”, yang artinya menerima masalah juga.

Bedanya face the music digunakan untuk masalah yang terjadi karena ulah diri sendiri. Sedangkan bite the bullet digunakan untuk masalah yang ditimbulkan eksternal.

Example:

  • Just face the music, if you never failed, you’ll never learn
  • It happens because of your mistakes, but there’s no need to regret it, just face the music
  • I finally got Sarah as my project partner, even if we’re already broke up, I think I just need to face the music now

Freak Out

Freak out adalah satu-satunya idiom dalam materi kali ini yang punya lebih dari satu pengertian. Idiom ini bisa berarti positif (sangat senang) ataupun negatif (sangat takut, sangat marah).

Untuk memahami pengertian freak out dalam sebuah kalimat, kamu perlu memahami konteks pembicaraan dan ekspresi orang yang mengatakan.

Example:

  • I was so freaked out when Jungkook walked towards me and finally shook my hand
  • Don’t try to surprise me, please, I’m so freaked out here
  • I don’t understand why suddenly Gabe freaked out and hit me

Get Out of Hand

Last but not the least, get out of hand adalah bahasa lain yang digunakan English native speakers untuk menyebut “di luar kendali”.

Example:

  • We don’t understand why it suddenly got out of hand
  • The fire gets out of hand, even if the firefighters have come
  • The kids got out of my hand, so they finally played even if I was still in the room
